.... the martini won out last night.
All I did was cast on for the swatch and knit 2 rows of garter stitch.
Now that the clue is up, I might just forget the swatch. Clearly the swatch pattern doesn't have much to do with the stole pattern. I'm just going to have to knit real slow, use a lifeline, a ton of stitch markers and lots and lots of counting.

heh heh. baaa-da-BOOM...
Okay, the edge stitches. (This is going to be a long comment!) I don't think you should slip them, as some people have suggested (JMO). I do think that you should get your practice on a swatch, though, before you start the project. :-)
First off, when you're blocking/pinning your swatch, there should be 3 points at the bottom and those points should be LOWER than the side edges at the bottom. Doing that will help you figure out what to do on the edge stitches (check out my swatches at fiberbabble - scroll down a bit).
When I'm doing the edge stitch, once I've put the right needle through the stitch on the left needle and BEFORE I wrap and pull it off, I snug up the yarn around both needles. When I pull the new stitch off of the needle, I kinda pull it out diagonally to tighten up base of the stitch. After that, I snug up the new stitch pretty derned snug (do it as tightly as you feel comfortable, keeping in mind that lace yarn is wimpy!) and keep some tension on it as I'm making my second stitch. I keep extra tension on the yarn while making the second stitch, then ease up to what is "usual" tension for the rest of the piece.
It's snug-pull-snug-snug-relax :-) The extra tension should help your edge stitches behave a bit!
Now, I knit continental, so it might be easier for me to keep tension on my yarn. I can't grasp how a thrower keeps consistent tension, but obviously it's done every day! Hope this helps!
BIG-baaa-da-BOOM! and a hearty "CHICKAHN GOOD" to you!!!
I understand your suggestion - however I also knit continental and (like I said) I knit WICKED tight. The snug-pull-snug-relax is my *normal* modus operandi - therefore all my stitches are tight and my edges are mondo loose.
I've been slipping because the edge loops tend to look like they are double or triple the size of my yarnovers.
Ja-Jah-Hammas!
